Chapter 10
Laney could no longer keep up the timid act. She crumpled to the ground, pale and stunned.
I hadn’t expected Lucian to show up at the airport.
Miles and I had planned it all-he’d release the exposé one hour before my flight, with influencer accounts
following up. In minutes, the internet exploded with Laney’s lies and Lucian’s betrayal.
But what I hadn’t counted on… was Lucian chasing me here.
“Margot! Margot Blake! Where are you? Let’s go home!”
“Please, don’t leave me!”
His voice echoed across the vast terminal. A few people recognized him, their whispers buzzing louder by the
second.
“Isn’t that the cheating professor? Who’s he yelling for-his wife?”
I pulled my cap lower and handed my ID to the customs officer.
She checked the screen and looked up. “Margot Blake? Please remove your hat.”
The name rang out. Someone nearby shouted, “She’s here-Margot Blake is over here!”
Suddenly, Lucian burst through the crowd. He yanked me out of the line.
“Margot, why are you in the international terminal? Where are you going?”
His hand was trembling as he held onto mine. I pulled away.
“We’re divorced, Lucian. You don’t get to ask.”
He froze. Pain flickered in his eyes.
“I told you that divorce was just a temporary move. Why would you go and finalize it behind my back?”
“You knew it was all a scam-why didn’t you tell me?”
“Was it fun watching me get played?”
His voice rose, laced with anger. The embarrassment was eating him alive. In just a few hours, he’d gone from beloved academic to public disgrace.
I kept my tone light.
“But you were the one who asked for the divorce first. That wasn’t fake.”
“You fell for her. That wasn’t fake.”

“This whole summer, you lied to me-said you were applying for a grant, but you were off playing house with
her. That wasn’t fake either.”
“And when I was being beaten by her family, you walked away-holding her. Not fake.”
I pulled down my collar, exposing the dark bruises near my collarbone.
Her relatives went at me so hard, I can still feel the bruises even now.
The moment he saw them, Lucian staggered. His already thin frame looked ready to collapse.
He whispered, broken, “Margot… I didn’t know. I’m sorry.”
“I was wrong. I’ve kicked Laney out. Please… come home.”
“We’ve been married for so long-we don’t have to end it like this.”
He dropped to his knees with a thud.
But before I could speak, a blur slammed into him, knocking him sideways. It was Laney. Crying like her world
had just collapsed.
“Professor! Why are you kneeling to that bitch?! Didn’t you say you hated her?”
“Didn’t you say we were soulmates? Isn’t the divorce what we wanted?!”
The slap rang out loud and sharp. Lucian struck her. Hard. The man who had always been soft-spoken looked
like he wanted to strangle her.
“Shut up! What the hell are you saying?!”
Laney froze. Her tears still clinging to her cheeks. But her expression twisted into something wild and broken.
“Margot! This is all your fault!”
“He was already mine!”
I looked at her calmly, a quiet sigh escaping my lips.
“You know, I really did admire you once. Your work. Your potential.”
