Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Jeremy’s heart suddenly skipped a beat, and his fists clenched without thinking.

He found a handwritten letter underneath after brushing aside the resignation letter on top.

“Jeremy, by the time you read this, it’ll be the day I’ve finally walked away from you. I’ve liked you since I started college, but I knew your heart belonged to Tricia, so I kept my feelings buried.

“Three years ago, when Tricia went overseas, I heard you went drinking at a bar. I was worried you’d get into trouble, so I went to look for you. I didn’t drug you. Yes, I liked you, but I would never stoop to that.

“I thought maybe I could change your heart. But I was wrong. You’ve only ever loved Tricia. So now, I’m letting you go. From this day on, let’s never cross paths again.”

The date at the bottom was from three months ago.

Jeremy’s arm trembled.

It was that time when she was hospitalized. She’d already made up her mind to leave him back then,

hadn’t she?

His whole body stiffened. His lips trembled, but he kept telling himself that it was fine. She had just quit

her job, but they were still married.

It was just a misunderstanding that could be cleared up.

He took a deep breath and flipped to the next page.

The words “Divorce Agreement” practically screamed off the paper.

Still clinging to a shred of hope, he told himself maybe it was just a blank form. He hadn’t signed anything,

so it wasn’t valid.

Nervously, he flipped to the last page.

And there it was, his signature-familiar and final. His heart sank.

“No way… When did I even sign this? It has to be fake!”

But as soon as the words left his mouth, he remembered a document she had given him to sign a few days ago. At the time, Tricia had been blowing up his phone, and he hadn’t bothered to read the contents

of the document,

So, these were Lexi’s anniversary gifts to him.

He gripped the two documents so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His voice cracked with barely contained rage. “Lexi, you’re cruel.”

He thought that was everything, until he spotted another sheet underneath.

A Chuter &

He pulled it out, and when he saw what it was, he completely broke down. Tears welled up and rolled down his jaw, hitting the floor.

The ultrasound image on the abortion report clearly showed the embryo.

‘Had she been pregnant before?”

He had always wanted kids. But years of heavy drinking had taken a toll on his fertility. It was only recently that his health had started bouncing back, and they’d finally been trying for a baby.

It turned out that they had one, but now, it was just a cold, clinical piece of paper.

Right then, Jeremy couldn’t hold it together anymore. He collapsed onto the floor in a daze.

“Lexi… Why couldn’t you have waited just a little longer? I could’ve explained everything… Why…”

He pounded his chest with his fists, wracked with regret. If only he had told Lexi the truth about his relationship with Tricia sooner, then maybe she wouldn’t have gone through with the abortion.

His face turned as pale as a sheet. His throat was so tight he could barely breathe, and the tears just kept

coming.

Somewhere in the haze of grief, he thought he heard her voice echo in his ears. “Jeremy, do you want a boy or a girl? What should we name the baby when it’s born?”

Her voice played on a loop in his mind.

He turned sharply and bumped into the safe beside him. A USB drive clattered to the floor.

He looked down. That USB hadn’t been there before. It had to be something Lexi added.

He hesitated. His hands trembled as he picked it up and slowly plugged it into the computer.

The screen lit up. Two video files appeared in the folder. The thumbnail looked like footage from their

villa.

Frowning, he moved the cursor over to click play.
