Chapter 7
“Charlie! Save me!” Zara screamed as she pushed Yasmine below the surface.
Yasmine’s limbs flailed wildly until she had no more energy.
She simply let the water flood into her ears and nose. Amidst the noise of the water rushing against her eardrums, she thought she heard Charlie and the twins’ voices.
Zachary and Rachel were crying and shouting. “Dad, save Ms. Zara!”
The manager turned on the pump to drain the pool, but the system suddenly malfunctioned.
He was so stressed that he was covered in sweat. His voice trembled as he asked, “Mr. Listford, this deep pool isn’t fully furnished yet. We only have the facilities to save one person. Should we save Mrs.
Listford first?”
Yasmine felt a spark of hope light up her chest.
Charlie’s gaze flitted between the two of them as he said bitterly, “I want to save them both!”
“Dad! Ms. Zara is bleeding!”
The twins cried out even louder. “Save her first!”
Charlie suddenly seemed to think of something and closed his eyes. He finally forced out the words,”
Save Zara first.”
At his command, the manager immediately gave the green light for the rescue team to start saving Zara.
The moment Zara was being lifted from the water, she harshly shoved Yasmine in the direction of some
sharp rocks.
Her injury split open, and her blood began to dye the pool a bright red.
As her vision slowly faded to black, she caught sight of Charlie kneeling down next to Zara, ready to give
her mouth-to-mouth.
The twins were quietly standing next to her. Their tiny faces were full of worry.
Yasmine’s body kept sinking further and further as she lost her grip on consciousness.
Before she fainted, she thought about how the teenager who was once always ready to stand up for her
had long since become a different family’s husband and father.
When Yasmine woke up, she discovered that she had been moved to the guest room of the mansion.
She was unbelievably stiff and found it hard to even lift a finger.

Charlie was standing next to the window as he smoked cigarette after cigarette. His expression was dark
and hard to read.
She barely moved, but he immediately turned to look at her.
He spoke. However, instead of showing concern, he began to interrogate her. “Why did you push Zara? She took care of you for me, and yet you treated her like this!”
Yasmine smiled mockingly.
She knew that any explanation she gave would just look like she was arguing with him.
“What about you?” she asked, looking at him. “Why did you save her first?”
His eyes gleamed with sorrow. “You know I lost my mom at a young age. How could I watch two kids lose
their mom?”
Yasmine simply stared at him quietly.
He finally noticed that he had slipped up and hurriedly corrected himself. “Well, Zara is a teacher at their orphanage. She’s basically a second mom to them. Besides, you were the one who pushed her.”
Yasmine cut him off. “What are you going to do?”
“Yasmine, I warned you not to do anything to Zara,” Charlie said. His face was shrouded in a dark shadow.
Yasmine finally noticed that he was holding the box that she treasured like it was her lifeline.
She kept everything she treasured in that box.
He looked down at her from above. “You have to face the consequences.”
He immediately acted on his words.
He ripped apart the seashell bracelet that he had strung together for her when they were kids.
He tossed all 999 love letters he had written to her while they were dating into the fireplace.
He shattered the ring he made for her that he had proposed to her with.
Every item destroyed made Yasmine’s face turn paler and paler as she watched the destruction unfold.
“I told you that Zara just cares a lot about the twins. You kept being unreasonable.”
With that, he took out the last item from the box and was about to toss it out of the window.
Yasmine’s eyes widened in panic. That was the emerald pendant that her mother had left for her.
Before her mom passed, she had held Yasmine’s hand gently as she told her, “Remember to pass down this emerald pendant to my future granddaughter.”
Charlie was about to destroy it!

She reached out in an attempt to snatch it from him, but her vision suddenly swam, and she fell off the
bed.
Her knee scraped against the floor, leaving a streak of blood behind her.
Charlie’s eyes softened slightly. He gently carried Yasmine back onto the bed.
He looked at his screen, which hadn’t stopped lighting up with notifications. He sighed and looked at her.
“The kids signed up for the orphanage’s study trip. As an investor, I’ll be joining as well. Let’s spend some
time apart,” he said in a low voice. “It might do us both some good.”
Yasmine simply agreed quietly.
His heart no longer belonged to her. It was no use to try and make him stay.
Not too long after Charlie left, Yasmine went to the Bureau of Civil Affairs alone.
The moment she received the finalized divorce papers, she felt like her heart had been freed from its
chains.
When her plane was about to take off, she closed her eyes and began to pray.
She prayed that her future without Charlie would be a smooth road, free of obstacles.
