Noelle frowned It felt like, the moment the door was left unlocked, anyone could just walk right in as they
please
Conner’s face was etched with fury.
Noelle had no patience left. The moment she saw him, she pulled out her phone, ready to call the police. There was no point talking to someone like him.
He had barged in time and again with lack of manners and respect while radiating a dangerous energy
that made people want to keep their distance.
“Noelle Spencer! I need to talk to you!” Conner walked straight up to Noelle and stopped in front of her, his eyes holding an unmistakable confidence that Noelle had no idea it came from.
“I just want to talk. I’m not here to stir things up,” Conner said seriously.
Seeing the serious look on his face, Noelle almost laughed. “Showing up uninvited is already stirring. things up. I have nothing to say to you. And whatever you have to say to me counts as causing trouble too.
Conner’s gaze swept over the living room and took in the piles of gifts, each one wrapped in festive wrapping paper. He figured they had to be the wedding gifts that Sebastian had brought over.
Conner gave Noelle a once–over. “All this just because of a few gifts? Are you really going to treat my family like this? Honestly, these gifts are nothing special. They are nothing compared to what my family
gave you back then.”
Noelle wondered if, once someone lost their shame, nothing could get under their skin anymore. At that moment, Conner was the perfect example–lying through his teeth without so much as blinking.
Even Mary couldn’t stomach any more of it. She was about to speak up, but Noelle stopped her. “Mom, there’s still a lot to get done before the wedding Go take care of that. I’ll handle whatever’s going on with the Ashfords myself
After that, Noelle led Conner to a coffee shop near the Spencer residence.
Before leaving, Conner deliberately looked over the heap of wedding gifts. One look was all it took for him to spot a top–grade emerald piece that had recently fetched a sky high price at auction
He sneered. There was no way a family like that could come up with something this expensive.
He thought the Cole family was trying too hard to look rich and, without even checking the market first, they were just setting themselves up to be a laughingstock later
At the coffee shop, Conner wore an expression of smug generosity as he said, “Noelle, don’t say I didn’t

warn you. If those wedding gifts are all real, they must have cost a fortune. The man you’re marrying couldn’t possibly afford that. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have bought a house all the way in the suburbs.”
He spoke like he was doing her a favor, as if sharing this information was some grand act of kindness.
Noelle pinched the bridge of her nose. She had assumed that after his little trip to the Cole residence, Conner would’ve figured out exactly who she was marrying. But judging by his words, it seemed he hadn’t put it together. If he had, he wouldn’t be talking like this.
She blinked lightly. She decided it was better to keep him in the dark for the time being. If Conner found out who the groom was, it meant the entire Ashfords would know.
