Chilled by his own calmness, he finally asked, “Did you find out what happened?”
“Brake failure,” came the reply from the guard.
Maddox instantly understood–this was the Wynn family’s retaliation.
Frankly, the fact that Victor was still alive meant they’d shown him mercy.
But Jonathan was still under strict watch. Who could have pulled this off?

He shook his head. She didn’t seem like someone who would take such a direct, bloody route.
Chase, then? It had to be. After all, Susie was his wife.
At that moment, in the hospital, Chase and Jose received the same news.
Jose’s eyes lit up and immediately turned to his father. Chase looked equally stunned.
Jose opened his mouth to speak, but Chase quietly shook his head.

Just then, Susie stirred.
Hearing movement, the two men rushed to her side.
When she heard their voices, Susie tried to speak–but the pain that tore through her body when she moved her mouth stopped her cold.
“Don’t move,” Chase said gently. “The doctor said your injuries are serious.”

Susie seemed to want to raise her hand to her face. She couldn’t see a thing–her eyes were bandaged.
Chase caught the gesture and explained softly, “You had a minor eye surgery. The light can’t hit them just yet. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine in a few days.”
She lay there quietly, listening to Chase’s voice.
She had truly believed she would die. She never expected she’d still get to hear her husband and son again.
Chase held her hand and whispered, “It’s okay now. Don’t be afraid. We will make that bastard pay.”
If Jonathan weren’t still under supervision, he would’ve acted long ago.
Back in the holding facility, Jonathan had also received the news–delivered by Stone. After hesitating for a while, Stone had decided he couldn’t hide it from him.
When Jonathan heard Susie was gravely injured and hospitalized, his face darkened.
He suddenly stood. “Thank you for staying with me all this time.”
Originally, he had planned to wait–buy time, lull them into a false sense of security. But not anymore.
Seeing the change in Jonathan’s demeanor, Stone lowered his voice. “Don’t do anything rash. It’s already been handled.”
He leaned in and whispered, “Victor was hit by a truck this morning on the way to the hospital. He’s still alive but in critical condition in the ICU.”
Jonathan paused, then said quietly, “In that case, this is the perfect time.”

Stone could tell Jonathan had already made up his mind, so he didn’t try to stop him.
An hour later, Jonathan was “politely” escorted out of custody.

The officials couldn’t hide the frustration on their faces. One of them even muttered bitterly, “Mr. Wynn, you are not permitted to leave the capital for now. You must be available for further investigation.”
Jonathan glanced at him.
The lead officer’s expression shifted immediately and snapped at his subordinate, “Mr. Wynn, please don’t take offense. He’s new.”
Jonathan gave a light smile and walked away.
As soon as he left, the leader turned to the rookie and hissed, “If you want to die, don’t drag us down with you.”
Everyone knew what this really was: a war among giants, with ants like them caught in the crossfire.
None of them wanted to offend Jonathan, but they couldn’t avoid this assignment either.
It would’ve been fine if they had uncovered something–but after two weeks of investigation, they’d found nothing.
Honestly, given Jonathan’s status, the fact that he’d cooperated at all was remarkable.
Now that this ticking bomb had been escorted out, the lead investigator finally breathed a sigh of relief. What the higher–ups planned to do next was no longer his concern.
Jonathan’s first stop was the hospital.
Jose and Chase were still by Susie’s bedside. She couldn’t speak, but having them there brought her some comfort.
The anesthesia had worn off. Her body was in agony, and she couldn’t sleep- jolted awake repeatedly by nightmares.
Chase saw it all and felt nothing but anguish.
