Jonathan knew exactly what Chase was about to say, so he spoke first, his voice calm. “It doesn’t change anything.”
He slowly walked over to Susie’s bedside. Earlier, in the doctor’s office, he’d already read her medical file.
Only now did he fully understand why Sierra had chosen to strike.
Standing beside Susie, he still couldn’t bring himself to say “Mom,” but he lowered his voice and said gently, “Rest now. I’m back. It’s going to be okay.”
Jonathan understood why Susie had gone to Victor.
The feeling was hard to describe. He knew exactly how much Susie feared that man. And yet, for him, she’d dared to go alone. She’d even tried to kill him.
When she heard Jonathan’s voice, tears streamed from Susie’s eyes. Her lips parted, and she murmured, “Sier… Sierra.”
Just saying those two syllables had taken everything she had.
Jonathan immediately responded, “I’ll go see Sierra soon. She’s okay.”
He didn’t stay long. After quietly reassuring Susie, he got up to leave.
Jose walked him out. At the door, Jonathan patted his shoulder.
“Take care of them.”
“I will.”
“And don’t do anything reckless. I’m back. Leave it to me.”
Hearing that from Jonathan, Jose finally felt a sense of ease.
He wasn’t a kid anymore, but somehow, Jonathan always managed to ground him.

From the hospital, Jonathan went straight back to the estate. Sierra was still asleep -she had only just managed to fall into a proper rest.
It had indeed been Sierra who had ordered the hit. Not to kill Victor, but to make sure he suffered.
When Jonathan arrived at the estate, the house staff were nearly in tears.
“Where’s Sierra?”
“In her room, resting,” the old butler answered quickly.
Jonathan kept his emotions in check, went to shower, changed into clean clothes, and only then stepped quietly into the bedroom.
Sierra hadn’t woken yet. Jonathan sat beside her, drinking in the sight of her as if he hadn’t seen her in years.
It had only been half a month, yet it felt like a lifetime.
She’d lost weight–noticeably so. Jonathan’s eyes dimmed with guilt.
It was all his fault.
Her appetite had only just begun to recover, and then this happened. She must’ve been suffering every day while worrying about him on top of everything else.
Sierra hadn’t been sleeping well. Usually, she would wake every couple of hours. Today was no different. She could feel someone watching her, and when she opened her eyes, she saw Jonathan.
When she saw him, Jonathan instinctively smiled and was about to speak when she mumbled, “Another dream… Professor Yaeger…”
Then she shut her eyes again, clearly wanting the dream to last a little longer.
Jonathan was stunned. After a moment, he gave a bitter smile.
She thought she was dreaming. That’s why she acted so calmly.
She must’ve dreamed of him so many times these past days.

“I’m sorry I made you worry,” Jonathan whispered, kissing her forehead, his eyes full of remorse.
Sierra shook her head, speechless for a long moment before she finally gathered her thoughts.
“Why are you back all of a sudden? Was it because of what happened yesterday?”
“Will it cause any problems?”
“No,” Jonathan replied. “Just a change of plans. Besides, when Victor had his accident yesterday, I was still under surveillance.”
As he spoke, he stroked Sierra’s face gently. “You’ve been through a lot.”
He’d left in a hurry, barely able to set anything in place. But Sierra had managed everything that came after.
He remembered the way she’d shut down those people from the extended family when they caused trouble. Her words had spread quickly. That was his Sierra- sharp, unbothered, and always in control.
“Do you want to sleep a bit more? Or eat something first?” Jonathan asked gently. “Still no appetite?”
“Not really.”
Sierra didn’t try to hide it. She looked up at him. “But now that Professor Yaeger is back, if he cooks for me personally… I might eat a little more.”
“Then I’ll go make you something now. You get a bit more rest.”
