Chapter 319
Those two kids were usually so well–behaved, but lately, all they did was cry.
It was driving her up the wall, but she couldn’t just wash her hands of it.
Celestine offered a faint smile. “You think this is a blessing? These two children are left with you–are you going to take care of them or not? And as if that weren’t enough, your brother–handsome, successful, and devoted–wants to marry you. Would you accept?”
Serena fell silent.
If she was honest with herself, she didn’t want any of it.
Celestine just laughed it off.
She didn’t wait for Serena to keep rambling, simply turned and left by another path.
Serena didn’t bother to catch up.
“How did your talk with your sister–in–law go?”
When Serena returned to the top–floor VIP suite, Sanderson and Dahlia were already waiting.
Sanderson was eager to know how her conversation with Celestine had gone–hoping for some sort of reconciliation.
After the ugly scene Dahlia had caused with Celestine in the hospital room last time, Sanderson was too embarrassed to face his daughter–in–law again himself.
But the minute he heard about the Selwyn family’s outburst earlier that day, he’d been the first to know.
He was already planning to send someone to clean up the mess, but someone else
had beaten him to it.
The Selwyns were fools, he thought.
Trying to stir up trouble, and in the end, they’d only managed to hurt their own child Malicious and stupid, both.
With his own plan now useless, Sanderson had no choice but to send Serena to play peacemaker.
She and Celestine were about the same age; if anyone had a chance of persuading

her, it would be Serena.
The timing was perfect–Celestine had just been bullied by the uncle’s family, so if Serena approached her with a gentle touch, even if she couldn’t win her over right away, maybe she could at least earn a bit of goodwill.
He pinned all his hopes on his youngest daughter.
But Serena just hung her head and shook it.
“Dad, maybe we should just drop it. Celestine’s made up her mind. It’s not like the Fordhams can’t find another match. Even if my brother is divorced with two kids, he’s still in high demand–women would line up for a chance to marry him.”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” Sanderson snapped, voice tight with anger. “Do you really think your brother married Celestine for love, or for her family background? Don’t forget, your grandfather is still alive! Those shares he handed to your brother? He could take them back anytime if Chester divorces Celestine. Chester isn’t his only grandson, you know.”
Sure, Celestine’s family wasn’t anything special, but Alistair, the old man, took loyalty and gratitude seriously.
Years ago, the Selwyns had saved his life, and he’d never forget that debt.
He wasn’t senile yet.
Half of the praise and prestige from Chester’s marriage to Celestine reflected back on Alistair himself.
Serena scowled. “Celestine can’t see what’s good for her. She’s sharp–tongued and stubborn now–there’s no way I can talk her around. She watched her own aunt have a miscarriage and didn’t even flinch. How can you expect her to take care of my brother?”
“Stop making excuses for your own incompetence,” Sanderson said, his face dark. “Do you really think the Murdocks are any better?”
He’d already had someone look into the whole affair.
Letting a mistress replace the wife, dragging everyone to the hospital for a showdown–no one in their right mind would pull a stunt that stupid.
Dahlia, unable to take any more, stepped in front of Serena protectively. “Why are you blaming Serena? She’s always been our sweetest child! The way Celestine’s family acted today just proves how rotten they are. If she really comes to look after Chester, I’ll never stop worrying! instead of wasting more time, we should get

Chester transferred to a hospital overseas as soon as possible.”
Chester’s accident was still a tightly kept secret.
Even Alistair hadn’t heard a word.
The longer Chester stayed unconscious, the more dangerous things got.
For now, Sanderson could cover things at the company, but not forever.
If this dragged on, the truth would come out.
Watching his wife and daughter huddled together, Sanderson just felt another headache coming on.
