Chapter 10
Henry said, “There’s still half a month left in Lexi’s divorce cooling-off period. Once that’s over, we’re getting married.”
Luke nodded approvingly and let out a sigh. “If only Lexi had chosen you in the first place, she wouldn’t have gone through so much suffering. I can tell she’s lost a lot of weight. There’s this tired, worn-out look in her eyes. Did she get mistreated all these years living at the Frey residence?”
Henry told him everything he’d uncovered.
Luke flew into a rage. “That punk Jeremy! I knew from the start he was no good, but I never thought he’d actually keep a mistress like some sleazy businessman! Since he dared to lay a hand on my daughter, there’s no need for the Frey Group to even exist anymore.”
Given the powerful backgrounds of the Shaw and Gamer families, taking down Frey Group would be as simple as making a phone call.
Just as Luke finished speaking, Lexi walked in. “Dad, I want to handle the situation with Jeremy myself.”
“Lexi, are you seriously still hung up on that scumbag? He cheated on you! What on earth do you still see in him?” Even Anne couldn’t hold her tongue this time
They hadn’t forgotten how she had once out ties with them over Jeremy. Hearing her words, they thought she was defending him again.
Henry stepped in to speak for her. “Luke, Anne, you’ve got it wrong. Levi’s not protecting him. She just wants to take revenge herself. She’s home now. We should trust her.”
Lexi stared at him in surprise. She never expected that he’d be the one who still believed in her the most.
“Lexi, no matter what you decide to do, I’ll stand by you.”
Luke and Anne exchanged relieved smiles, thinking that Henry was still the same as before, unconditionally devoted to their daughter.
“Lexi, you and Henry have already lost seven years together. Don’t mess it up again this time.”
Tears welled up in Lexi’s eyes. She nodded hard.
“No matter what happens, I won’t lose him again. Henry, let’s get married next month. I want the grandest wedding in all of Juville.”
Henry just stared at her, stunned, like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He knew part of her reason for coming to him was to get back at Jeremy, but he didn’t care. He thought he’d have to slowly win her heart again, but to his surprise, she was already talking about marriage.
Seeing that he didn’t answer, Lexi started to second-guess herself. “Do you think it’s all too rushed?
“No,” he said quickly. “I just can’t believe you’re really going to marry me. Lexi, I’ll make sure you never
have to suffer again.”
That was his promise.
She smiled and said, “I believe you.”
Luke and Anne stood off to the side, smiling in satisfaction. Henry had always been their ideal son-in-law. They were at ease handing Lexi over to him.
Over the following weeks, Lexi officially took over Shaw Group.
News of the Garner and Shaw families joining through marriage spread like wildfire across the elite circles. Henry even started planning the wedding well in advance.
One evening, as usual, Henry came to pick Lexi up from work.
“I booked an appointment at the bridal shop for tomorrow. I wonder if Ms. Shaw can squeeze it into her busy schedule,” he teased.
Since taking over the company, Lexi had been working nonstop. They barely saw each other outside of the evenings.
Realizing she’d been neglecting him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and apologized, “I’m still learning the ropes at work. But no matter how busy I am, trying on my wedding dress is non-negotiable. Of course, we’re going together tomorrow.”
Henry grinned, satisfied. “Good.”
To make things easier for work, he’d been staying with her at her apartment.
That night, just after she came out of the shower, she found Henry sitting on the bed, looking troubled.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
He looked up at her but hesitated to speak.
That only made her more anxious. “Henry, did something happen? If you don’t tell me, I’ll find out myself!”
The next second, Henry got up and pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly like he couldn’t let go.”
Lexi, if Jeremy ever comes back for you, would you leave me for him?”
