Chapter 20
Jeremy sounded stubborn, but deep down, he was panicking.
Henry casually raised his paddle and said, “20 million dollars.”
Just for a necklace, 20 million dollars was already insane.
Jeremy’s expression turned cold as he called out, “25 million dollars.”
As he kept bidding, he was also texting his assistant, asking for a rundown of all the assets under his name to see how much money he could actually pull together. He had already lost Lexi once. He wasn’t going to lose this necklace, too.
But Henry didn’t give him the chance. Leaning by the window with a cigarette between his fingers, he looked completely relaxed and unbothered.
“I’ll outbid any amount,” he said.
The whole room went nuts.
It meant no matter how much someone bid, he’d always top it.
It was extremely rare, as most people didn’t have the nerve. Besides the risk of getting dragged into a bidding war, not many had the guts or money to go all in like that.
The last time anyone had pulled that move in Juville, it was also someone from the Garner family, Henry’s father.
In the back of the room, Lexi finally said, “It’s just a necklace. It’s not worth all this.”
“To you, maybe. But to me and Jeremy, it’s not just a necklace.”
The auctioneer smiled politely. “Mr. Frey, would you like to place another bid? If you plan to continue, we’ll need to verify your funds. You’re about to max out your credit rating with us.”
People nearby began trying to talk him down.
“Mr. Frey, let it go. That’s the Garner family. You’re not doing yourself any favors trying to outspend them.”
“Exactly. None of us could match them even if we pooled all our money. You still have a chance to bow out gracefully.”
Just then, Jeremy’s assistant texted back. “Mr. Frey, you only have 20 million dollars in liquid assets.”
Even if he wanted to keep going, he simply couldn’t.
With all eyes on him, he clenched his fists, his whole body deflating. “I’m out.”
And just like that, Princess Dorothy’s necklace went to Henry.
Henry gave a smug little smile and did not let him off the hook. “I told you, Jeremy, you were never going
to beat me.”
His cocky voice echoed through the auction hall. He also seized the opportunity to announce, “Lexi and I are getting married in three days. You’re all welcome to join us.”
He looked right at Jeremy. “Mr. Frey, I’ve even reserved a seat just for you. Don’t forget to come.”
Jeremy shot up, glaring daggers at him. “Don’t get too comfortable, Mr. Garner. This isn’t over yet.”
“We’ll see about that.”
Jeremy stormed out of the room.
News of Henry’s extravagant bid at the auction for Lexi spread like wildfire. The media couldn’t stop talking about how much he doted on her.
The day before the wedding, Lexi had just gotten home from a beauty appointment when she saw Luke sitting in the living room, looking grim. “Dad, what’s wrong?”
He sighed and handed her his phone.
She glanced at the screen and gave a sarcastic little laugh.
“It’s my wedding day tomorrow, and Jeremy’s already pulling this stunt today. How impressive.”
The internet was blowing up with rumors that she and Jeremy had once been married. Even worse, there were claims that she’d had an abortion just a month ago.
The comment sections were brutal. People were calling her “damaged goods”.
Henry was rich, good-looking, and insanely popular. Tons of people had crushed on him over the years.
And now, finding out that he had been waiting all this time for Lexi only made things worse.
The scandal had them out for blood.
Luke was furious. “I knew that guy was no good. After everything you did for him back then, this is how he repays you? He’s basically trying to destroy you. No… We need to find him and make him come forward to clear this up!”
Lexi was about to say something when her phone rang. It was Jeremy calling.
His voice sounded drained. “Lexi, you’ve probably seen the stuff online. It doesn’t have to be like this. If you’d just come back to me and remarry me, I’d clear everything up myself.”
