Chapter 3
Seven PM. At that upscale French place downtown where you need reservations a month out.
Soft lighting, jazz playing low.
I’d just sat down with my parents by
y the window when Mom was trying to get me to try the foie gras
she’d ordered
“Violet, honey, look over there…” Mom suddenly pointed her fork toward a corner booth, voice uncertain. “Is that… Ryan?“]
I followed her gaze.
There in the dim corner, under those warm amber lights, two people were having quite the intimate dinner.]
Ryan had his back to us, cutting up steak all gentlemanly. Wearing this soft smile I hadn’t seen in forever.
Across from him sat a girl in a white dress. Long hair down, head tilted, cheeks all flushed
Madison.
y he wasn’t answering my texts. Why his phone was “dead”
So this is why
What a joke.]
“Wow Mom, great eyes. I tried calling him this afternoon but his phone was dead. His assistant said Ryan had some important client dinner tonight. Guess we found his “client…“]
I could hear the fake cheerfulness in my own voice.
Mom made this confused little “oh” sound, squinted–over again, then shook her head. That’s one hell of a young client…”
Dad shot me a knowing look and flagged down the sommelier.
I set down my water glass and pulled out my phone. Snapped a quick pic of their cozy little corner.
Madison’s Instagram had just updated too.
In the picture, the restaurant’s fancy chandelier, perfectly plated food, some guy’s hand pushing cut steak toward her.
[Someone canceled his big meeting just for me! Phone’s off so it’s just us two! So happy! (heart memes)]]
Location tagged: Sophie’s French Bistro
Rage shot straight to my head.]
I screenshotted Madison’s little bragging post.
Posted it to my own Instagram story.
No caption needed.
Set it so only certain people could who were absolute gossip queens
see it: Ryan’s parents, my brother, a few key executives from the company, and… a couple friends
Chapter 1
Then I put down my wine glass and walked straight over to their table.
