Chapter 19

Monica’s jaw trembled with fury. “Jessie, don’t worry. I’ll make sure you get justice for everything you and your baby went through!”

Jessie simply curled her lips into a faint smile and said nothing. Anna had made her life miserable, and

Jessie wasn’t about to let her off easy.

She had just stepped outside to hail a cab to go home when a Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of her. The

rear window slowly rolled down. Zane turned to her and said, “Get in.”

Once she was inside, Jessie asked, “Didn’t I say I could go home on my own? Why did you come pick me

up? I heard from your assistant that you have a ton of meetings today. Are you done with all of them?”

Zane, busy handling the paperwork in his hands, didn’t look up or reply.

Jessie felt that something was off about him today. She glanced at the driver in the rearview mirror.

Meeting her gaze, the driver explained, “Mrs. Stafford, Mr. Stafford heard you went to see Mrs. Kerr. He canceled all his meetings just to come find you. Things are only slightly better now that you’re here. On the way over, Mr. Stafford looked like he was ready to kill someone.”

Hearing that, Jessie couldn’t help but chuckle.

Suddenly, Zane stopped working and glared at the driver in the front seat. His voice was chilling as he said, “You sure talk a lot. Should I transfer you to the PR department?”

The driver immediately shut up and focused on driving.

Jessie said, “He’s only telling the truth. Why are you being so fierce? Are you jealous because I went to

see my ex-mother-in-law? I only met her for your sake. After all, you’re the one who crippled Brandon’s leg.

“Even if the Kerr family is afraid of the Stafford family’s power, it’s better for me to smooth things over a

little and keep things from getting ugly.”

Seeing that Zane was keeping silent, Jessie leaned closer and gently bit his earlobe.

His face flushed visibly. Jessie’s voice softened even more.

“Alright, don’t be mad. I didn’t tell you only because I didn’t want you to get jealous. But I can promise you that from now on, I won’t meet any of them in private again. Zane, are you not confident in yourself?

You’re so good to me. Would I be blind enough to choose someone else?”

Jessie wasn’t particularly skilled at flirting. If anything, she was clumsy. Yet somehow, her lines worked like magic on him.

Zane’s dark eyes locked on hers. He slid his hand to the back of her head, pulling her closer and closer.

“If you’re not blind, then how could you mistake your savior for someone else? You’ve already made one stupid mistake. Who’s to say you won’t make another?”

Chapter 19

Jessie was speechless.

Seeing her at a loss for words, Zane gave a faint smile. He slowly released her and said, “Tonight, we’re going back to the Stafford residence for dinner. My mom wants to meet you.”

Jessie stared at him helplessly.

Zane was seriously petty. She had merely gone to see Monica, and now, he was dragging her to meet his

own mother that very night.

“That’s way too sudden. I haven’t prepared anything at all. You should at least give me some time to get

ready.”

It was her first time meeting her mother-in-law. Showing up empty-handed would be terribly inappropriate.

Zane replied, “My mom said gifts don’t matter. What matters is you. As long as you show up, she’ll be happy. Tonight’s a family banquet, and there’ll be quite a few other people in attendance. Even if I’m not by your side the whole time, don’t be afraid. I’m the heir of the Stafford family, and you’re the future lady

of the family. If anyone dares to upset you, you don’t need to show them any mercy.”

Zane’s words warmed Jessie’s heart.

Three years ago, when she first married into the Kerr family, she had also attended their family banquet.

Right before leaving the house, Brandon had warned her, “There will be many elders there tonight. You’re representing my image, so don’t embarrass me. In the Kerr family, you’re a junior. Whatever the elders say, just listen and don’t talk back.”

Jessie had to endure many grievances when she was part of the Kerr family. But in the Stafford family, Zane gave her ample respect and a sense of security.
