In the height of summer in Norland, Noelle suddenly sneezed for no reason, and a chill crept

up

her spine. She had the unsettling feeling that someone was watching her with ill intent

That day, a few relatives visited the Spencer residence. They were all from Patrick’s side of the family

Noelle rarely had any contact with them, and after Patrick’s incident, those people distanced themselves from the Spencers even more

Still, Mary was goodnatured and believed that guests should be treated well. She specifically told Noelle to buy some good wine for the occasion

While Mary busied herself in the kitchen, the living room was packed with people. Yet no one lifted a finger to help

As soon as Noelle got home, she set her things down and went straight to the kitchen

The relatives in the living room sat nibbling on snacks, casting sidelong glances at her. One of them remarked, Noelle was so polite when she was little, but now she doesn’t even bother to

say hello. If you ask me, Mary never taught her child any manners.”

Noelle stopped in the kitchen doorway for a moment. She thought to herself that these relatives really had some nerve

When the welcome party was held, they refused to attend. They said they didn’t want to be caught in gossip and didn’t want anyone to know they were still in contact with the Spencers. They also feared that Patrick’s troubles might drag them down

Yet now, with the welcome party long over and the wedding just around the corner, they showed up quietly

They were obviously not here to offer congratulations. They came to see Noelle and her family’s misfortune, flaunt themselves, and let Mary wait on them while they were at it

Noelle turned around, her eyes narrowing as she fixed her gaze on the group of relatives

She tried to recall when they had fallen out with Her father’s side of the family. It was probably back on the day she was born, when those relatives had disliked that she was a girl and kept urging Patrick to abandon her and try for a son

The loudest voice in that camp was Patrick’s older brother, Donald Spencer

Now Donald’s son, Kenneth Spencer, had returned from studying overseas and landed a job at a popular tech company, which only made Donald strut around even more

Donald gave Noelle a displeased look. What kind of look is that? Mary clearly didn’t raise you right. A young lady like you daring to glare at your own relatives like that.”

Kenneth, decked out in designer clothes and brimming with arrogance, glanced at Noelle from the corner of his eyes. Dad, don’t bother arguing with that woman. Back when she married into the Ashford family, I already thought she was reaching way above her station

But some people just can’t hold on to blessings that don’t belong to them. Look at her now, she ended up widowing Conner. I was hoping to use her to get in with him, but now all I can do is send flowers to his grave.”

Noelle narrowed her eyes and clenched her teeth. You all sound full of energy, so I guess you’re not hungry. In that case, I’ll tell my mom to stop cooking.”

As soon as she finished speaking, she moved to stop Mary, who was busy in the kitchen

Donald’s wife, Mille Carson, stepped in. Oh Noelle, look at you, you really can’t take a joke. Your uncle and cousin were just teasing you.”

Noelle frowned. Aunt Millie, a joke only counts if the person on the receiving end thinks it’s funny. Otherwise, it’s just bullying and humiliation

Millie’s expression turned awkward. After a long pause, she mumbled, You see, you always make a big deal out of things.”
