Chapter 502

There were others who snapped and tried to fight back, only to be beaten bloody by Drake’s men-their eyes gouged out, faces left unrecognizable.

One man took a bullet to the head right in front of Marina, his brains spattering across the floor at her feet.

Fear gripped Marina so tightly she could hardly breathe.

She was terrified she’d be the next one shot or mutilated.

But the more afraid she became, the sharper her mind grew.

She knew she couldn’t die here.

If she did, she’d never see Jonathan again.

Jonathan—he was the single beam of light that had carried her through that pitch-black nightmare.

Even now…

Only Jonathan…

Sensing Marina burrowing deeper into his embrace, Jonathan hesitated for a split second before wrapping his arms more tightly around her trembling form.

“Prescott, take us to Vanguard Towers.”

With her face buried against Jonathan’s chest, Marina furrowed her brow.

Vanguard Towers? Where was that?

She’d never heard of it before.

“Yes, Mr. Thomas.”

Clearly, Prescott knew exactly where he meant.

Marina wanted to ask Jonathan, but she bit her tongue. This time, she

really was the helpless victim. All she needed to do was quietly accept Jonathan’s protection and care.

If she could, though, she’d much rather Jonathan just take her home.

To his place-any one of his homes would do.

It wasn’t until she followed Jonathan into the grandest office in Vanguard Towers that the truth dawned on her: Jonathan had brought her to see a psychiatrist.

“No, Jonathan… I don’t want to see a doctor, I just want you… I just need you with me…”

She clung desperately to his suit jacket, her eyes swollen and red from crying, her vulnerability impossible to ignore.

A psychiatrist was the last thing she wanted.

Marina admitted to herself that maybe, after everything she’d been through, she was a little messed up. Anyone else in her shoes might have lost their mind already.

But she didn’t need a doctor.

She needed Jonathan.

Jonathan was the only therapy she wanted.

“Don’t be afraid, Marina. I’ll be right here with you…”

Jonathan gently patted her shoulder.

At that moment, she was like a frightened bird, ready to take flight at the slightest sound.

Throughout the psychiatrist’s questions, Jonathan stayed by her side.

At first, Marina was terrified to face the doctor, but thankfully, it was clear the psychiatrist was someone Jonathan trusted. He didn’t ask any

uncomfortable or prying questions.

When the interview was over, the psychiatrist handed her a glass of water. After she finished drinking, Marina’s head grew heavy and, before she knew it, she was slumped against Jonathan’s shoulder, fast asleep.

Jonathan carried her into the adjoining lounge.

“Let her sleep as long as she needs,” he told the psychiatrist.

There had been two sedatives dissolved in that water-on Jonathan’s orders.

Marina had been through too much. He believed she needed rest more than anything.

Besides-

If Marina stayed awake, she’d never let him out of her sight.

And then he wouldn’t be able to get anything done or go anywhere.

“She’ll stay here for the night. Take good care of her. I’ll come by first thing in the morning.”

“Yes, Mr. Thomas,” the psychiatrist replied without hesitation.

While Jonathan was making sure Marina was settled in, Niamh was wandering the halls of the Metropolitan Museum, searching for inspiration-when, quite unexpectedly, she spotted Elmer.
