Niamh stood frozen, as if struck by lightning.
What had Jonathan just said?
He claimed her shares were marital property, and that he had a right to them as well?
Niamh almost blurted out, right there in front of everyone, that she and Jonathan had been divorced for ages.
But Jonathan, of all people, would know that better than anyone.
And yet, he’d said it anyway…
A chill crept up from the soles of her feet.
Could it be-
The thought that began to form in her mind made her shake her head forcefully.
No more wild speculation. She needed answers, and she needed them now.
“Jonathan…”
She locked eyes with him, her words slow and deliberate: “We are divorced.”
“Are you sure about that?”
Jonathan’s smile was almost infuriating in its calmness.
For the first time, Niamh found his ever–present smile utterly unbearable.
“What are you trying to say?” she snapped, her patience fraying.
“Just what you heard…” His response was as evasive as ever, offering no clarity at
all.
Niamh’s mind was a tangled mess. Every board member in the room was watching
her.
If…
If she and Jonathan weren’t officially divorced, then her shares would still be considered joint property. That meant she couldn’t exercise her rights as the company’s majority shareholder without his consent.
The board meeting couldn’t go on like this. Without another word, Niamh shot out

of the conference room.
She made it out of The Thomas Group headquarters in record time and sped toward city hall.
“This is impossible… Completely impossible…” she muttered to herself as she drove.
There was no way she and Jonathan were still married!
No matter how she tried to reason it out, it just didn’t make sense.
Jonathan had been the one to suggest filing for divorce overseas. They’d gotten the paperwork, the certificates, everything. Publicly, both the company and Jonathan himself acknowledged they were divorced.
“So what’s Jonathan playing at?” Niamh wondered aloud while waiting at a red light.
Was he just buying time, giving the other board members a chance to regroup?
The light turned green, and Niamh forced herself to focus on the road.
Three cars back from her white BMW, a midnight blue Bentley followed in the
traffic.
Jonathan sat behind the wheel, silently tailing her.
His sculpted face was unreadable, but his eyes–dark and fathomless–were swirling with emotion.
The drive from The Thomas Group to city hall wasn’t short, but it wasn’t far either.
Niamh parked, climbed out, and strode into the building with determined steps.
“Hi, I need to check my marital status,” she said at the front desk.
The clerk blinked in surprise but didn’t ask questions–just told her to wait a
moment.
Across the street, Jonathan sat in his Bentley, parked out of direct sight of the
entrance.
From here, he could see everyone coming and going–Niamh included–but she’d have no idea he was there.
He waited a long time before he finally spotted her emerging from city hall, looking furious.

Jonathan reached for the door handle, but paused as a white Lexus pulled up.
He watched as Elmer got out, crossed over, and placed a comforting arm around
Niamh’s shoulders.
Jonathan’s hand tightened on the steering wheel.
Outside city hall, Elmer kept his arm around Niamh as they disappeared into a quiet little café nearby.
