Chapter 12

“But we made Mom angry,” Zachary said as he looked up with teary eyes. Pitifully, he asked, “Will she forgive us? When we fell down the stairs, she was so worried and tried to get us a blood transfusion.”

That sentence made Charlie’s blood run cold.

“Did Mom try to use my blood from the blood bank?” He clutched Zachary’s shoulders tightly, feeling his

throat closing up.

The two kids were terrified by his sudden dark gaze and began to cry. “We were hurt! We don’t know!”

Charlie realized that he was losing his composure and grew pale. He hurriedly apologized and handed the

twins to a housekeeper to take care of.

He called Alex and said urgently, “Book the earliest flight back home and cancel all my schedules immediately!”

Intense fear began to wash over him.

He already had a rough guess, but he kept avoiding it.

He had to go back and find out the truth so that he would finally know why Yasmine left him so cruelly.

It was already 3:00 am by the time they landed.

Charlie dropped the kids off at the Listford residence and rushed tirelessly to the hospital.

“Mr. Listford, on the day of your twins’ surgery, Ms. Steele did ask about your blood in the blood bank, but

I made it clear to her that you were their biological father, and that direct blood relatives could not give

blood transfusions.”

The doctor sighed as he repeated himself for the third time.

His blood froze as Charlie stood still, unable to hide his expression.

Countless memories began to flood into his mind. Each memory was more painful than the last.

Yasmine had known it all a long time ago.

She had found out that Zachary and Rachel were Charlie’s biological children.

How ridiculous.

She had stumbled on the truth in her rush to save the twins.

Her strange actions had started after that.

She no longer waited for him to come home after meeting clients so she could feed him homemade hangover remedies. She no longer ironed his shirts for him, laying them out next to the tie she would pick out for him. She didn’t even ask about him and Zara anymore.

She didn’t even blink an eye when the kids treated her horribly.

She acted like an emotionless zombie, or like an omniscient being who simply watched them act out their

little play.

He froze in his spot. Only his fingertips moved as he clenched and unclenched his fists.

The cruel truth dug into his heart like a thorned spear. Even a simple tug was enough to leave him bloody

and mangled.

His mind was a mess. He turned to leave, but his vision suddenly started to swim.

Amidst his loss of balance, the doctor reached out and helped him stand on his feet again.

“Mr. Listford, I shouldn’t be poking into private matters, but…” the doctor trailed off with a sigh. As if ripping off a bandage, he said abruptly, “Even if you have a mistress or a sugar baby, you shouldn’t parade

her around in front of Ms. Steele.”

“What?”

The doctor sighed again. “She had just suffered a miscarriage, but you were acting all lovey-dovey with another woman in front of her. That just poured salt on her wound.”

Charlie’s tall figure stumbled as he almost keeled over again. His eyebrows were raised in shock.

“Miscarriage?” he repeatedly murmured to himself. “Y-Yasmine had a miscarriage?

“Impossible!” he suddenly roared, grabbing the doctor’s shoulders and shaking him back and forth. “She

got stabbed to protect me and became infertile! How could she have been pregnant?”

The doctor shoved him away. “Mr. Listford, please calm down! She was injured, but not completely infertile. Her baby should have been a well-deserved blessing!”

The room suddenly fell eerily silent.

Charlie took the pregnancy report from the doctor with trembling hands.
