Amelia tried to walk around Nathan toward the building, but he stepped in front of her again.
“I know what Noemi said about the Visconti assets.” He grabbed her wrist.
At the mention of her family, Amelia stopped and looked at him.
Waiting.
“She’s not getting that department.” Night wind ruffled Nathan’s hair. “When you come back, it’s still
yours.”
Come back?
Amelia studied his face carefully.
But she had zero interest in returning to Harrison Corp
She was fucking done with all of it!
Nathan’s expression stayed neutral as he watched her #eaction.
But he realized he couldn’t read her anymore.
Wind blew softly, scattering fallen leaves.
“And then what?” Amelia said.
“Then what?” Nathan frowned, thinking. “Vivian had something urgent to discuss with me. It wasn’t
planned.”
Amelia actually laughed.
Noemi had literally waved her phone in her face. She’d seen enough to know they’d coordinated this.
Now he was telling her Vivian hadn’t meant to show up?
Did he think she was stupid, or was he really that clueless?
Done with this conversation, Amelia yanked free and headed for the entrance.

Nathan moved to block her path again.
“Nathan.” Amelia had hit her breaking point. She stared him down. “From the night you asked for a divorce until now, I haven’t interfered with your life once.”
“It’s you two!”
Her hands balled into fists.
“You’ve been putting on this public soap opera throughout our entire marriage, making it tabloid gold. Do you have any idea what people are saying about me?”
Seeing Nathan’s frown, his dark eyes, his silence, Amelia smiled bitterly. She looked away toward a spider spinning its web in the corner of the entrance.
“I get it. You care about her, you feel sorry for her, you love her. You say she’s got six months left.”
“So could you please spend those last six months together without dragging me into it?”
Each word was crystal clear:
“Let me go, okay?”
She refused to be a prop in their twisted love story.
Not for one more second!
Amelia walked away.
Nathan reached out but stopped himself.
He let her go.
Watched her get to the elevator, watched the doors slide shut, watched her disappear.
Nathan stood there alone for a long time.
Her words kept playing on repeat in his head.
He’d come to explain everything, but suddenly realized his explanations were worthless.
Until he could tell her the truth, until Vivian was gone, nothing he said would matter.

Nathan’s fists clenched, still feeling the warmth of her skin, knowing he’d never be able to hold onto her
again.
He looked up where she’d been staring.
The spider had finished its web and sat in the center, waiting for something to get caught
Whatever.
He understood why she was pissed today.
He’d find another time to talk.
Nathan looked away.
He closed his eyes, centering himself.
When he opened them, his face was blank again.
Nathan got back in the Maybach but didn’t start it.
He stared up at the lights in her apartment.
He wanted to stay.
Even if he just sat here doing nothing.
After her shower, Amelia collapsed into bed.
She knew Nathan was still down there.
She didn’t give a shit.
Wind whispered through the night.
Morning came eventually.
Rain had fallen sometime during the night, leaving everything soaked.
When Amelia looked down in the morning, the rain had stopped and the Maybach was gone.
Only a dry spot on the wet pavement showed where he’d waited all night.
Fine.

Live her life.
Focus on her goals.
That’s what mattered.
Time flew.
Soon it was the fourth Voice of Heaven live show.
Day 27 of the divorce countdown.
In the studio, Nathan sat in his usual spot.
Same seat as always.
Arthur and Lester Wessex were there with Charlotte.
Vivian made her rounds saying hello, but after last time, the Wessex family kept their distance. When they saw her coming, they quickly found their seats.
Especially Charlotte and Lester, who stayed deep in conversation, making it impossible for anyone to
interrupt.
So Vivian could only chat with Nathan.
Amelia was ready.
Semifinals–six contestants cut to three.
She stood quietly in the backstage makeup area.
Glancing at the text Vivian had just sent to Elena’s number-
This is your last shot.
Then watching the two people talking, Vivian’s smile skeningly sweet.
Since their blowup, they hadn’t spoken at all.
Nathan hadn’t tried to find Amelia, and she sure as he hadn’t reached out to him,

They’d become complete strangers.
Which was perfect.
Would make signing those divorce papers in three days a lot easier.
After handling various logistics, Louie went to schmooge with the Wessex family.
They hadn’t been original Voice of Heaven investors, but yesterday they’d suddenly jumped in.
Not as partners, just advertisers.
Whether for live commercial breaks or edited reruns, more sponsors meant more money.
As one of New York’s three major powers, controlling jewelry and luxury retail, the Wessex offer was
solid.
Since it was last–minute, Louie wanted to make sure everything was smooth.
After a quick chat, he headed backstage.
But Nathan stopped him as he passed.
Vivian had left, so Nathan was sitting alone.
“What?” Louie really couldn’t stand Nathan and wasn’t bothering to hide it.
Feeling the hostility, Nathan’s brow creased.
“What’s your relationship with Amelia?” Nathan’s black eyes bored into Louie, trying to read him. “And
who the hell is Elena?”
Louie barely stopped himself from saying “fuck off.”
He took a breath, trying to stay professional: “Not your business.”
“Amelia is my wife.” Nathan emphasized the last word.
Louie lost it. He made an exaggerated shocked face and pointed across the room at Vivian: “Then what’s
her deal?”
His tone dripped sarcasm.
