Amelia looked at the documents.
She didn’t give a shit what Nathan’s game plan was.
Whether it was compensation or hush money, none of it would change her plans.
“I seriously don’t get the Wessex family. Can you ask them about it when you get a chance?” Louie said.
“Maybe Lester’s just fanboying? You might need to sign some extra autographs for him.”
Amelia stayed quiet.
Maybe she could figure out the Wessex situation later, but right now she only had two priorities:
1.Prep for the Voice of Heaven finale.
2.Divorce Nathan.
Amelia spent the whole day juggling different shit.
She’d put Elena’s SIM card back in her phone.
James had set up a blocking program, so all the random calls and texts wouldn’t get through anymore.
But most of what was coming in now were fishing attempts from various parties.
People asking Elena about her connections to Harrison Corp and Wessex Corp.
Amelia ignored all of it.
Soon the day was over.
Amelia went to pick up Mila from school.
From way across the pickup area, she spotted Mila in the crowd
Mila saw her 100.
Then came bouncing over with the biggest smile.

Amelia crouched down and hugged her tight.
“Aunt Amelia!” Mila chirped
“Hey sweetie!” Amelia fixed Mila’s clothes.
“What do you want to eat? I’ll take you somewhere special, Amelia smiled and pinched Mila’s cheek “Except for…”
“Ice cream!” Both Amelia and Mila said at the same time.
They both cracked up.
Mila’s heart condition meant no ice cream.
They were totally in sync now.
Amelia finished straightening Mila’s outfit, then took her to sit in a nearby pavilion.
She poured Mila some warm water.
Mila actually had something on her mind too.
She’d been thinking all day about Nathan’s visit last night.
“Aunt Amelia, I need to ask you something,” Mila finally said.
Amelia took the cup Mila handed back and looked at her seriously.
This morning, she’d sensed Mila had something to say
Mila hesitated, then asked carefully: “Do you still like than?”
Amelia had no idea why she’d ask that.
But she answered honestly: “No.”
Mila visibly relaxed.
Amelia laughed: “What’s up?”
“Last night he came to the children’s home to see me and bought me tons of stuff, but I didn’t take any of it.” Mila filled her in on the previous night.

“Later the director told me he donated money to the children’s home.”
As Mila talked, Amelia’s brow furrowed.
Nathan had gone to see Mila?
Last night.
A gentle breeze stirred as a Maybach pulled up by the roadside not far away.
In the back seat, Nathan looked toward the mother and daughter in the distance.
Mila’s sweet but slightly worried voice carried through the car window.
“Aunt Amelia, I told Nathan you don’t like him and to stop hurting you,” Mila said in her little kid voice. “T also told him to stop coming to see me, that he’s not my dad.”
“Aunt Amelia, are you mad at me?” she asked, looking up at Amelia.
Amelia smiled and pinched Mila’s cheek: “Of course not. honey. Don’t worry about it.”
She took Mila’s small hands: “Stop overthinking. How about we make lasagna tonight? I’ll cook for you. I saw online how to layer it so it looks like your big–eared dog.”
“Yes! Yes!” Mila’s face lit up–she loved Aunt Amelia’s cooking!
After making their plans, they headed to the car together.
The car started and drove off with the mother and daughter.
“Sir, should we follow them?” The driver was Eddie.
But Nathan just shook his head.
He wasn’t even sure why he’d come here–maybe just to see her.
But he knew Amelia didn’t want to see him
She was still pissed.
The mother and daughter’s happy chatter seemed to co in his ears. Just a few words, but they cut deep.
She hadn’t denied what Mila said

And…
Lasagna.
She hadn’t made that for him in forever.
Not just lasagna–so many other things.
Before, no matter how late he got home, she’d wait up and have a whole spread of comfort food ready.
She always made him feel safe, at peace.
But..
Nathan closed his eyes.
Those days felt like ancient history now.
“How many days left in the cooling–off period?” Nathan asked.
Eddie had this memorized: “Sir, today is day 28. Two more days and you and Mrs. Harrison can file for
divorce.”
Nathan didn’t respond. Eddie glanced at him in the rearview mirror, hesitated, then said: “Are you
reconsidering, sir?”
Nathan immediately opened his eyes and met Eddie’s gaze in the mirror.
Eddie got the message and looked away fast.
“Sorry, sir,” Eddie said. “Shouldn’t have asked.”
Nathan didn’t really scold him, just stared out the window.
It was school pickup time–tons of people everywhere.
All here to get their kids
Watching couples holding their children’s hands and walking out together made Nathan feel something
he couldn’t name.
“Eddie, how long have you worked for me?” Nathan asked

Eddie Wanh was his secretary’s full name.
“Sir, I’ve been with you since you took over the company at 22. $1x years now,” Eddie answered.
six years
But Amelia had been with him for seven.
Seven years.
Thousands of days and nights.
Nathan stared out the window.
“Take me somewhere that serves lasagna. Somewhere decent,” he said.
“Yes sir!” Eddie immediately started driving.
Meanwhile, Amelia drove Mila back to her place.
Watching Mila work seriously on a puzzle in the rearview mirror made Amelia feel content.
Even though Mila still called her “Aunt Amelia,” she believed that someday Mila would want to call her
“Mom.”
With that thought, she decided she needed to warn Nathan again to stop harassing her daughter.
Mila was her daughter and had zero connection to Nahan
Amelia took Mila home and cooked her an amazing diner
They laughed and had the best time together.
Meanwhile, across town
A certain man had tried lasagna at every decent restavant in New York but couldn’t find the taste from Jas memory
Nathan stared at the lasagna in front of him
Were his taste buds broken?

Food was food, right?
Even if different people made it, it couldn’t be that different.
Finally, Nathan put down his fork.
He’d been acting weird lately.
Maybe he should see a doctor.
Time flew.
Day 28 of the cooling–off period was done.
Day 29 was another quiet but busy day.
Late on the night of day 29, when Amelia got back from the practice studio, it was already really late.
After her shower, she checked the time–just past midnight.
Early morning of day 30 now. In 24 hours, her and Nathan’s divorce cooling–off period would be over.
