Chapter 92
Nathan’s outburst had completely terrified Mila!
She was sobbing now, but Nathan still wouldn’t pull over.
“Stop the damn car!” Amelia shouted.
Nathan kept driving.
“Nathan!”
Amelia pulled Mila close, rubbing her back soothingly.
“Nathan, Mila has a heart condition,” Amelia said frantically, her eyes burning with fury. “Are you trying to give her a heart attack?”
She’d already lost two children. She couldn’t–wouldn’t let anything happen to Mila.
Nathan glanced in the rearview mirror and finally saw Mila’s tears.
Jaw clenched, he slowly pulled over to the curb.
Looking at Amelia’s furious, red–rimmed eyes in the mirror, Nathan’s knuckles went white on the steering wheel.
Amelia didn’t say another word. She just got out with Mila in her arms.
She was kicking herself–she never should have let Nathan bully her into getting in his car with Mila.
Then none of this would have happened.
“Amelia!” Nathan called after her.
She completely ignored him, flagging down the first tax she saw and heading straight for New York
General.
Nathan wasn’t giving up. He followed at a distance.
Watching that black Maybach in the side mirror, Amel wanted to scream.

At Nathan. At herself. At this whole mess.
She looked down at Mila, still gently rubbing her back
“Hey, sweetheart, how are you feeling? Anything hurt Amelia asked softly.
Mila wiped her eyes.
“I’m okay, Aunt Amelia,” she whispered, shaking her head.
“If you feel weird at all–even a little bit–you tell me, okay?”
Mila nodded, curling up against Amelia without another word.
The scene had brought back memories for Mila.
Kids don’t remember much, but she still remembered the screaming matches her birth parents had before they dumped her.
This time was different, though. Aunt Amelia had protected her.
Being in Aunt Amelia’s arms felt safe.
The taxi pulled up to New York General.
Caspian Lopez was already waiting outside.
He hurried over when he saw Amelia and Mila getting out, then spotted Nathan climbing out of his car.
Seeing Nathan approach, Amelia quickdy sent Mila inside with Caspian and turned to face Nathan alone.
“Amelia “Nathan jogged over, looking stressed.
“Look, I didn’t know about the heart thing.” he said.
Amelia stared at him.
“Sick or not, you don’t yell around kids.” she said flatly
Nathan didn’t argue They just stood there, locked in other staring contest
This had become their thing lately.
It was exhausting

Wind rustled through the parking lot, and Nathan finally broke the silence: “So what’s the deal with you and Louie Cavendish?”
Amelia’s eyes fluttered shut.
“There is no deal,” she said. “I figured you saw the statement online.”
Of course Eddie had briefed him on everything.
So why was he here, making her life hell?
She thought she’d been pretty clear–ignoring his calls, his texts, shutting him down at Moonlight Manor.
In the corner of her eye, she could see Mila refusing to go inside, watching them with Caspian.
Amelia turned to leave.
“Hold on.” Nathan grabbed her wrist. “I’m not done.”
She jerked away.
“Nathan, I told you–I’m here for Mila’s appointment. She needs surgery,” Amelia said through gritted
teeth.
But Nathan stepped into her path.
Mila was still staring.
Amelia felt a headache building.
“Fine. Noemi’s wine thing is in a couple days. I’ll be there. Ask me whatever you want then.”
She met his dark eyes: “Nathan, don’t make me hate you.”
She walked around him and headed for Mila and Caspan.
Nathan wanted to say more, but her words kept ringing in his ears.
He watched her take Mila’s hand and disappear into the hospital, his chest tight.
How had they gotten here?
Amelia could feel Nathan’s eyes on her back.

Mila kept looking over her shoulder, and his stare was like a weight between her shoulder blades.
Whatever. It was almost over anyway.
Once the divorce was final, they’d be strangers.
Caspian glanced between the two of them, his expression complicated.
He’d seen the tabloid stuff about her and Louie.
He knew there was nothing there–she’d never given Louie any encouragement.
But he was a guy. He could read between the lines with Louie’s intentions.
And honestly? It bugged him a little.
Still, he wanted her to be happy.
Caspian looked down at Mila, who was tucked against Amelia’s side. “Alright, kiddo, you’re coming with me for some tests. If anything feels off, just say so, okay?”
Mila turned those big eyes on him.
“Okay. Thank you,” she said quietly.
The tests took forever.
Results would come back later, so Amelia took Mila home.
They cooked dinner together, ate, then settled on the couch to watch TV.
Peppa Pig was on.
Mila loved that show.
When it got dark, Amelia drove Mila back to her foster home. Just before getting out, Mila hesitated.
Amelia could tell she had something on her mind.
“What’s up, honey?” Amelia parked and gave Mila her fill attention.
“Aunt Amelia,” Mila said carefully, “that guy today… heknew you, didn’t he?”
Amelia didn’t answer right away, just studied Mila’s serious little face.

Chapter 92
Outside, wind whipped through the trees, making the creak and rustle.
Under the streetlights, people walked by, their voices and laughter floating into the car like something from a dream.
Should she tell Mila the truth?
After a moment, she decided to be honest.
Mila would be living with her soon anyway. She’d find out eventually. And Nathan might show up again.
Mila was smart for her age–mature enough to handle it.
Amelia took Mila’s small hand in hers. “Yeah, sweetie. He’s my husband.”
Seeing Mila’s confused expression, she quickly added, “But not for much longer. In nine days, we’ll be divorced. So you don’t have to worry about him.”
She smoothed Mila’s hair back. “Sometimes you meet the wrong people in life. He’s one of my mistakes.”
“But I’m fixing it. He doesn’t matter anymore. We’re going to be just fine.”
