again. How’s she gonna attend a wine tasting?”
“True. Wine tastings mean drinking. She’s got terminal stomach cancer. You want her chugging wine? That’s basically assisted suicide.”
“Fair point.”
Vivian’s fans tried damage control:
“Amelia’s just being opportunistic. She’s totally shameless. She can’t let go of that Harrison money, so she’ll tolerate anything. Bet she’s counting down the days till Vivian dies so she can keep playing wife.”
“Exactly. Just gotta wait six months for Vivian to croak naturally, and she’s still Mrs. Harrison. Win–win
for her.”
“Right? Nathan and Vivian’s affair is front–page news, and she’s still willing to be seen with him. Shows how desperate she is for that Harrison cash. Embarrassing.”
“Nathan!” Inside the ballroom, Noemi spotted them and glided over.
She lifted her champagne flute toward Amelia but didn’t call her sister–in–law.
A server materialized with a tray.
Amelia and Nathan each grabbed a glass.
Since Noemi was family, Nathan made polite conversation.
“…So yeah, Nathan, I’m joining the company soon. You better not stick me in some dead–end department,” Noemi said with a cat–like smile, shooting a glance at Amelia.
Nathan’s poker face didn’t crack. He just nodded.
“Decided yet? Taking over your dad’s division or starting fresh somewhere else?”
“I’ll fill you in later,” Noemi said mysteriously.
After the pleasantries, Noemi drifted off to work the room.
Nathan smoothly steered Amelia toward a quieter corner with plush seating.

As they walked away, Noemi watched them go, something sharp flickering in her eyes.
Amelia followed Nathan to a secluded couch area, and immediately they both went mute.
Total silence.
Like complete strangers.
“Those injuries from your fall…” Nathan started.
But he trailed off, realizing how dumb the question was.
In the dim corner lighting, he could see her exposed skin was flawless–no trace of bruises or cuts.
Right. It had been weeks. Of course she’d healed.
He looked up to find Amelia watching him.
Her face was unreadable.
“Mila mentioned you were hurt,” Nathan added lamely
“I’m fine now,” Amelia said simply.
Physical wounds healed. What she’d lost never would.
“That day… I didn’t mean for you to fall,” Nathan said eventually.
Everything had been chaos. By the time she went down those stairs, all he remembered was his own hand reaching out.
This time Amelia didn’t respond. She just stared at the wine on their table.
His intentions didn’t matter.
The baby was gone.
Forever.
A wave of grief hit her. She picked up her glass and took a small sip, trying to wash down the bitter taste in her throat.
Back to silence.

Neither said a word as minutes ticked by.
Nathan was getting pissed.
She’d been like this for weeks–treating him like he didn’t exist.
How long was this cold shoulder gonna last?
T
But looking at how thin she’d gotten, the sadness in her profile even when she was trying to stay composed, his anger fizzled.
“I transferred some money to your account,” he said quietly. “You’re healed now, but… take care of yourself.”
He hated seeing her this skinny.
When he’d held her at Moonlight Manor, she’d felt like nothing in his arms.
Like he could break her just by holding on too tight.

Her car went bright, dark, bright again.
Green light. Amelia pocketed her phone, hit the gas, and merged smoothly back into traffic.
Message received loud and clear. No escaping this wine tasting.
Even if it was a setup, she had to show.
At least there, she could handle whatever they threw a her.
Plus…
Noemi’s face flashed through her mind.
After years with Nathan, she knew Noemi pretty well.
Noemi was proud as hell, but she had the resume to back it up.
They used to avoid each other. Who knew what had happened during Noemi’s time in France.
If it involved Amelia, the possibilities were limited.
God, she was tired.
And she needed to deal with the Nathan problem once and for all.
Late–night New York was getting gusty.
Black sky, streams of traffic, scattered city lights–everything felt wrapped in something dark and restless.
Clouds raced overhead like a storm was coming.
Two days later, it was showtime.
Tonight was Noemi’s wine tasting.
She’d booked the fanciest hotel in the city–the whole pace, just for her homecoming party.
Which was actually pretty modest for her
Usually families like the Harrisons held these things at private estates–mansions, country clubs, yachts, members only spots.
Quiet luxury that kept the riffraff out.

This kind of flashy hotel event wasn’t their usual style.
Amelia drove over and met Nathan at their agreed spot
Nathan’s face tightened when he saw her dress.
She wasn’t wearing the gown he’d sent her.
One look at Nathan’s expression and Amelia knew exactly what he was thinking.
She was wearing something borrowed from Louie’s wardrobe department.
She didn’t want anything connecting her to Nathan.
Amelia didn’t bother explaining. They headed inside together.
The ballroom was perfect–temperature–controlled, warm golden lighting, soft piano music, and dozens of people in designer everything making small talk over champagne.
Being a wine event, the air was thick with rich, complex aromas.
Nathan commanded attention wherever he went. The second they walked in, every eye in the place locked onto him.
Cameras started clicking.
Within minutes, Amelia and Nathan Harrison Attend Noemi’s Party Together was trending everywhere.
Nathan had been showing up with Vivian lately, so this was the first time in weeks the actual married couple had appeared together.
The internet lost its mind.
“Holy shit, they’re actually together again.”
“Where’s Vivian? Hasn’t Nathan been glued to her lately?”
“Dude, read the room. This is Noemi Harrison’s homecoming. She’s family. Bringing Vivian would be
weird.”
“But he brought Vivian to that charity thing.”
“You’re clueless. Vivian’s been sick. She’s swamped with the ‘Slight Love‘ series, plus I heard she collapsed
