Chapter 228

Chapter 228

The mocking look on Harrison’s face froze in place.

Selene had just finished her shower. She hadn’t even had time to dry her hair before she rushed out of the bathroom. Damp, ink-black hair clung to her shoulders, soaking the fabric of her shirt, with a few strands sticking to the elegant curve of her neck. Her pale skin was flushed, and her collarbone was sharply defined above the edge of her collar.

Harrison stared at her, his Adam’s apple bobbing as his breath caught, suddenly unsteady.

The two officers exchanged a knowing glance in Harrison’s direction.

A bitter laugh slipped from Harrison’s lips. “Selene, are you trying to get under my skin? Don’t tell me what I have with Felicity is the same as what you have with him?”

“Mr. Vaughn, please let go of her,” one of the officers prompted, voice firm. “You do realize, this could be considered harassment.”

Selene set down the mop she was holding, and Harrison finally released his grip on Carmel’s collar.

Selene immediately grabbed Carmel’s hand and pulled her behind, shielding her protectively.

Carmel’s face was ghostly pale. Harrison’s sudden aggression had unearthed memories she thought were long buried.

Seeing Selene stand so defensively in front of Carmel, Harrison let out a derisive snort.

“Carmel and I grew up together-we’ve always been close. But it’s always been just friendship between us. If something really were going to happen between me and Carmel, do you really think you’d have ever had your chance, seven years ago?”

She wasn’t explaining herself; she was mocking him.

Chapter 228

If Harrison had any sense, he’d remember: If Felicity and I were ever meant to be, do you really think you’d have gotten a look in?

“Harrison, during our marriage, you were still acting like Felicity was your best buddy. And yet all those years, I never once contacted my closest friend. I did right by you. Can you honestly say you did right by me?”

Harrison’s jaw tightened, the muscle along his jawline going rigid.

“So what if Carmel spent the night at your ex-wife’s place? Didn’t you and Felicity share a hotel room-just the two of you, all night long?”

Harrison’s brow furrowed. “Nothing happened between me and Felicity!”

Selene laughed coldly, looping her arm through Carmel’s. “Oh, please. You and Felicity are the picture of innocence, aren’t you? Don’t you dare drag your filthy suspicions into my friendship with Carmel.”

A tangled mess knotted up in Harrison’s chest, like a cat clawing apart a ball of yarn. He knew Selene had always minded how close he was to Felicity. But he’d never cared what his wife thought.

He knew Felicity’s feelings had long crossed the line of friendship. He’d convinced himself that as long as he kept his own boundaries, it didn’t matter; Felicity was just a friend. Why should Selene be bothered?

But now, Selene clearly didn’t care about his feelings at all. The moment

she said the words “close friend,” Harrison’s reaction was immediate and

violent.

Yet he had no grounds to object-no right at all.

He told himself it was over. They were divorced. It shouldn’t matter to him if Selene slept with her “best friend.”

But his body refused to listen to reason. He watched Selene and Carmel, fists clenched so tightly the veins stood out on the backs of his hands.

Selene caught his reaction and found it laughable.

It only hurts once it happens to you.

And Harrison, right now, didn’t even have the right to feel hurt.

One of the officers narrowed his eyes, glancing at Carmel’s neck. He thought, “She really is Selene’s best friend-no Adam’s apple there.”

The mighty CEO of Vaughn Enterprises, so blinded by jealousy he couldn’t even tell if the person in front of him was a man or a woman.

But the officer decided Harrison’s confusion about Carmel’s gender was the least of his problems.

He reminded him, “Mr. Vaughn, don’t forget why you’re here.”

The officer’s words snapped Harrison back to reality. His expression darkened, tone imperious as ever. He gave Selene a command:

“I want you to sign a statement of forgiveness for Felicity.”

Felicity had been arrested for disturbing the peace-ten days in jail and a hefty fine. The punishment was as severe as the law allowed.

But the international racing season was about to start, and Harrison had paid a small fortune to hire the Luna Racing Team’s engineering crew for Felicity.

She needed time to practice, to work with her new team, to have any hope of competing.

If Felicity waited out her sentence, the championship would be long over.

So Harrison had shown up at Selene’s door, police officers and lawyer in tow, determined not to give her any chance to refuse.
